Purpose
In many ways what follows here is my own story. At any university, students often don’t know why they are there. Perhaps their parents thought it was a good idea. Maybe all their friends went off to college and they thought they should as well. They soon find out they are bored, apathetic and without direction. But then a light goes off. Why? The answer is as different as there are students. That answer might be found in these philosophical quotes:
"The only constant is change"
— Heraclitus
"Man is condemned to ask questions that he can never answer"
— Kant
"Out of chaos comes the dancing star"
— Nietzsche
Sometimes that light goes off because that formerly apathetic student realizes that the questions they have been asking about the meaning and purpose of their life have been asked countless times by some of the greatest thinkers in both the western and eastern philosophical traditions. They are not alone. And that’s when they catch fire. For too many students there can be a lack of support at this critical moment. An apathetic student is rarely, if ever, a good student. If they come from a family unable or unwilling to finance a philosophical or intellectually driven academic quest, then there are few other financial means of support. While student loans can be helpful to some degree, they can also be a huge burden later in life. What I am trying to do here is help steer some funding from generous and understanding souls, directly to a particular student’s own Go Fund Me sites, where people can contribute whatever they like. Even ten dollars can make a student feel at least like somebody cares. The tuition for a three-credit hour philosophy class at the school I teach at costs very close to a thousand dollars. It takes six classes to complete the Philosophy Minor. We don’t have a major. What will they do with a Philosophy Minor? They will figure it out. Like life. And they do all kinds of things: law enforcement, rancher, teacher, nurse, artist, engineer, professional photographer, accountant, a Ph.D. in mathematics.
